Construction

We’ve gotten through all the preliminaries; now it’s time to build.  Construction of a home from raw materials is a complex process of coordinating the efforts of up to 40 different specialty trades to build a home.  The construction phase is where your vision of a new home becomes reality, and we’re there every step of the way to ensure it gets built to the standards you expect.  From the highly skilled tradesmen we use, to establishing and maintaining a timeline for execution of each phase of construction, our skill and attention to detail shine.  Quality is a critical element of any new home, and we ensure quality through our quality checkpoint processes.  It’s these quality checks that ensure your home is built to our high standards, and we are very particular about how our homes get built.

Traditional Construction Method

When you choose our “Stick Built” (or “Traditional”) process, we build your home from raw components in the field.  This process allows for a greater flexibility of design and execution, and is the “established” method of homebuilding.  From foundation to move-in, we establish and coordinate a timeline with milestones and quality checkpoints, ensuring your vision of a home and our understanding of what is necessary to achieve a quality build becomes reality.  There are a tremendous amount of details involved in building a home, but we have established systems by which we manage and guide these details to completion.  Throughout the process, you are involved in some critical decisions and milestone checkpoints, but largely we manage the day-to-day details so you don’t have to.  We are passionate about stick building; there’s nothing quite like seeing a bundle of lumber, steel, and components come together to shape a home.

The rough stages of stick building come together from excavation through drywall.  It’s a process that involves many trade partners and coordination with local code inspectors as well as our own more in-depth quality checkpoints.  While the code inspectors ensure the home is built safely, it’s our quality checkpoints (and the strict guidelines we give our trade partners) that ensure your home performs to the high standards you expect.  Largely, the performance of a home, or lack thereof, is determined by the way the rough components are put together.  We worry about “what’s behind the walls” so when you’re living on the finished side of those walls, you’ll be comfortable, secure, and happy.

Modular Construction Method

When you choose to build using our Modular process, we coordinate the lion’s share of construction above the foundation through a modular trade partner.  The quality checkpoints we normally perform in the field throughout the construction process are handed off to the skilled production professionals at the factory.  We are constantly evaluating and monitoring our modular trade partners to ensure your modules are produced by skilled professionals who share our passion for quality.  In the modular factory, quality checks are performed both by organic quality managers, and by third-party inspectors these companies must hire to monitor their quality and adherence to higher levels of structural integrity that modular homebuilding requires.  Dovetail’s role in the field is to prepare a foundation for the modules to be set upon, and coordinate timelines.  In the end, the results are largely the same as traditional stick building; it’s basically stick-built in the factory, then placed on a foundation.
